Finish Line Portaits-Raven 50 Miler Ultra

You know that feeling you get when you push your body and mind to the absolute limit on one of the hottest days of the year, all so that you can cross under a banner and run, hobble, or jump into the arms of people you love?

THESE PEOPLE DO!

Ultra running is truly one of the best sports there is…(and yes I may be bias as a distance runner myself, but that’s just because I truly understand just how good that finish line feels after a long day on the trails)

It was SO fun watching all of these athletes pour themselves into the Raven 50miler earlier this month, and be there to welcome them with a finish line portrait. The race takes place in the Traditional Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, with much of the trail being in Kwanlin Dün’s traditional hunting grounds and on settlement land. A huge Shä̀w níthän, Másin cho, GunałchÎsh and Hiy Hiy to both for the opportunities we are given to take in the beauty of these lands!

We weren’t sure what to expect when we originally signed up to volunteer for this race. Ultra running is an intense sport, and when we woke up to the news that it was going to be a scorcher of a day out there, we weren’t sure if we’d be getting a lot of broken humans crossing that line, or how people would feel.

BUT we quickly realized that we were going to be witnessing a lot of sweaty smiles, proud tears, and pure exhausted joy as people flew across that line and were ushered in for a portrait.

The joy, the high fives, the family and friends that were pulled in for photos because everyone knows you don’t finish one of these things without many months of support…what an awesome thing to witness.

Huge Congrats to all of you racers for finishing one tough race!

**Runners we didn’t realize you hadn’t gotten these yet!! Please feel free to save, share and post your images from the link below:

Manitobah Mukluk's

What did I get Gary for his birthday this year?….WORK!

BUT…we flew to the top of a mountain with a group of the best crew and talent you could ask for, and there was cake so…I still call that a win.

This past spring, we got a call from TSU North, asking if we wanted to work on the new Manitobah Mukluk’s campaign they were doing, and the obvious answer was immediately yes.

So while TSU created a stunning film piece featuring the talented Notorious Cree and Kendra Jessie in some of Yukon’s most epic locations, we created the partnering photography campaign. This project took us from industrial wearhouses to insaaane Yukon mountain tops, and we also got to feature a set of local powerhouse Indigenous models as well!

This project was so special to us, as anyone who knows our company, knows that working with brands that are doing good in this world, with strong values is so vital to us. Being able to work with such an incredible set of talent from both the crew and the modelling side was the perfect way to kick off our summer season.

We’re so stoked this campaign is now out in the world and that we’re able to share it!

Hiy Hiy to our unbelievable cast and crew and to TSU North and Manitobah Mukluks for bringing us onto such a powerful project.

And a little BTS for good measure….

What am I an Expert?

When getting a project done entails everything from wading through a creek holding your lights over your heads, to finding just the right angle to shoot a tray of bird specimens, you know it’s going to be a fascinating ride…

And that’s exactly what our latest project with Yukon University was! We were lucky enough to get to create this series of portraits and action shots of some of the University’s experts.

From Ornithology to Mine Remediation, and Climate Change, Yukon University has a vast group of faculty and researches who share their expertise both locally and globally.

We got to learn a lot over the course of this project, in particular, just how much research is happening right here in the North that we didn’t even realize!

For more info on just how many different fields are being worked on here, check out Yukon U’s website.

And here are a few of our favourite images from the series. Thanks for letting us tag along as your students everyone!

New look...who dis?

Ok, we can all agree, it’s been a rough year so far…I think it’s about time we all take a deep breath, put our feet up and get some pampering done….and have we got the spot for you….

We were SO stoked when we were asked by the wonderful Ammanda Partridge of Elements Spa to work with her on some new imagery for a website upgrade the company was doing. Ammanda and her team are one of the many incredible small businesses we have here in Yukon who, in the face of extreme uncertainty and challenges this spring, found a way to keep fighting through it and are now back open, and thriving. With support through the PIVOT program at Yukon University, we were able to team up with Ammanda to help her showcase the range of services and service providers she has on her team.

Ammanda wanted to make sure her new imagery was authentic (and not just use stock images), and we didn’t want to just go with the expected either…it would have been easy to simply grab a few shots of their facility (which is gorgeous), along with some traditional head shots of her staff, but instead we went in a more stylized direction. We wanted to highlight the services they offer, but use Yukon models (and real customers!) and also plan them so that they would fit the aesthetic of her new site which was clean, calm and spacious.

SO with that in mind, we spent the day with an incredible group of people creating this new set of imagery below that we’re so excited with.

We cannot recommend the Elements Spa team enough if you’re looking to treat yourself or someone you love….they’re a wonderful team (who happen to make excellent models too)

Public Service...More than 9-5

I don’t think anyone really imagined at the start of this year, that come spring, they’d be attempting to navigate a global pandemic both at home and in the workplace…
2020 has been a doozy of a year on so many levels…and people around the globe are adapting to this ‘new normal’ which is ever-changing as the weeks go by…

One of our favourite parts of our job normally is getting to see the behind the scenes of how businesses and organizations work. We take pride in being able to showcase employees on the job-doing their every day tasks that create the world we live in and keep it functioning….and to be able to have continued to have done that throughout this experience with COVID has been pretty remarkable.

One of the projects we were really stoked to work on, was capturing a variety of employees on the job for Government of Yukon’s Public Service week this year. They wanted to celebrate the employees that have continued to come to work throughout this time… from the workers who left their regular positions to be re-stationed in the Emergency Coordination Centre, or Health Emergency Operations Centre, to those who suddenly had to figure out how to balance working from home while simultaneously home schooling their kids…public service workers make up a huge part of the Yukon’s workforce, and it was really great getting to help celebrate them.

For many, the past few months have been a lot less of the regular 9-5 routine many may think of when they hear the term ‘public service’. Across departments, staff were working extra hours, and often shuffling schedules to try to accommodate new family and life realities during the toughest months at the start of all this. New policies were being written across Departments to keep people safe, some traded their regular work stations for fold out tables in utility trailers, and many suddenly had new roles to take on, on top of their regular duties.

There really isn’t a single sector in our community that wasn’t hit by a new reality this spring. We, along with all of the other local businesses and organizations had to suddenly adapt to something none of us could had expected. But one thing that we’ve found remained solid across industries and organizations was seeing our community come together and find resilience through it all. Yet another reason we’re so grateful for this place we get to call home.

Dream Trail

It’s a bit of an understatement to say we’re grateful that our home is right here in the Yukon. We’ve always felt this way (I, Brianne was born and raised here, while Gary moved up from BC over 14 years ago now…) but this year especially we’ve got a whole new appreciation of the amazing community, and landscape we get to call home.

One of the many reasons we love it here is the incredible trail system and landscape we get to play on. Through biking and running, we get to explore mountains right outside our back door. So when we were asked to cover the trail crew who was building the new “Dream Trail” on Grey Mountain last summer, we were stoked as it gave us an opportunity to see some of the trail building team in action.

The Youth Achievement Centre (YAC) and City of Whitehorse trail crews are working over a 5 year period to build this trail, which will connect the end of Grey Mountain road, along the ridge with epic views 600 meters above Whitehorse, ending in a flowy dream down to the base of the mountain again.

Built by hand, the crews spend long days digging away, along with lead trail builder Joe de Graff. The plan is for it to a be a multi-use trail which will allow bikers, runners, and hikers alike to enjoy.

To say it’s hard work is an understatement. The team of city workers and YAC crews take a quick flight to the top in the morning, but then work a solid day on the trail before hiking out at the end.

It was so awesome getting to know the hard working crews behind these trails that we all get to enjoy-and we can’t wait to see what the final product will look like. From the previews we’ve gotten already…Dream trail certainly is a good fit for a name.

T1D. A Portrait Series

Earlier this spring we were lucky enough to be asked to do a portrait project for an amazing local organization called the Yukon T1D Support Network.

This organization provides peer supports, education, and advocacy for Yukon citizens diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, many of which are children.

As part of an awareness project, the organizers wanted us to create a series of portraits of various community members who are either diagnosed themselves, or are family members of people who are living with T1D.

We were so honoured to be able to work with such an inspiring group of people and were so excited with how they turned out.

If you, or someone you know has T1D and is looking for more support, advocacy, information or just a place to connect with some pretty amazing people-you should check out the Yukon T1D Support Network!
