A great place to Gather

We’re not gonna lie…we have a soft spot in our hearts for family run businesses…As one ourselves, we understand the full family commitment it takes to keep these trains a runnin’.

Whether that’s trading off who works late, impromptu ‘bring your kid to work’ days (Mabel was on her first set at 6 weeks old!) or doing business planning over dinner…it takes the whole crew working together and loving what you do.

So needless to say, when we got asked to create some imagery for Gather Cafe and Taphouse recently, we were stoked. Gather is a self-described “eclectic restaurant” located in the Lumel Studios building here in Whitehorse.

Owners John and Shanta Ferguson, have created an incredibly unique space, that is filled with colours and textures from floor to ceiling. The ambience fits in perfectly to the attached Lumel Studios, which just so happens to be the Grandparent’s place-Lu and Mel!

So, the day we were there to photograph, Grandma and Grandpa watched the kids, so that we could get our shots done with John and Shanta. Like any family run business, it takes a team to make it all come together…Combing their loves of good coffee, good beer, and good food, adding in a health dash of cozy atmosphere, Gather is a place you just want to spend time in!

From meals made with as many locals ingredients as possible, to drinks served in hand made glassware created right next store at Lumel, you can tell thought was put into every detail of the place.

We can’t wait to go back to enjoy the space again and definitely suggest if you haven’t had a chance, to go check it out!

Cheers to Polarity

Whether you’re celebrating the start of a fresh new month, the fact we’ve made it through this week, or you’re just excited about this glorious sunshine that’s coming back to us a little more each day…we are lucky to have some pretty great places to treat ourselves in this fine community of ours.

One of the newer ones on the block is Polarity Brewing! They started up last year…admittedly a bit of a difficult time to open up a pub, but nothing can stop delicious brews, and awesome meals featuring as many local farm products as possible!

They even have an outdoor deck you can cozy up to a fire table at to stay Covid-safe while you toast to your weekly accomplishments!

We always love celebrating our local businesses, but especially during a time that has been so difficult on the food/beverage industry, we’d like to cheers to all you hard working businesses owners out there still making it work and providing us with little local escapes.

Here’s to Friday everyone-cheers!

Turns out birding is awesome...

Being commercial/industrial photographers, we have gotten to experience a lot over the years in terms of learning about different industries, programs and organizations. That’s one of our favourite things about our job is that we are constantly learning new things and getting to meet the awesome people that make up our community.

BUT one thing I can say that we have never come across before is Birding…until NOW that is!

We are so stoked to be working with Lotteries Yukon and Mosaic Communications on Lotteries’ new “What’s Your Recreation” campaign, which was just launched! Throughout the course of the year, we get to work with Yukoners around the Territory and get portraits of them out doing a variety of recreational activities

And you know what guys? Thanks to Tedd here, our first model of the series, it turns out we learned Birding is CRAZY COOL.

Like did you know Woodpeckers tongues are so long, they actually wrap around their entire skull to help protect their brains from concussions!?

LOOK AT THIS DIAGRAM IT’S INSANE:

And that’s just the start of it…Immature Eagles have longer wings than adults because they act like “training wheels” and the Arctic Tern (which we do get here in the Yukon) has the longest migration of any animal in the world!

BIRDS! Fascinating creatures…

All this to say, my world view on birds has been changed. I now get excited when I hear them. I’ve caught the birding bug….

Huge thanks to the awesome team behind this exciting campaign! It’s always so awesome to see our images “out in the wild” with design and we are so excited to see what else we get to capture along the way!

Klondike Kettle Corn

One of our favourite projects so far this year was getting to work with Klondike Kettle Corn to develop some new imagery for their upcoming website re-launch and marketing materials!

Anyone who follows the work we do, knows we love working with small businesses and entrepreneurs, and getting to know Katie and her family was no exception. We got to do some lifestyle images with them, and they even braved the -40 weather we happened to get that weekend so that we could get some authentic Yukon Outdoor lifestyle shots! They were total pros the whole time. Our computer/tether system, however of course decided it didn’t want to work in -40, so we just did without….

Then, we went into a new realm that we haven’t tried before…food photography! For this set, we partnered up with Tara Kolla, a local stylist, who came to the GBP studio and worked with us for the day. We were so happy with how these turned out…and we can also confirm these flavours do in fact taste as good as they look. There was a LOT of taste testing going down…And our computer/tether system enjoyed this temperature a lot more.

Showcase your company: Creating a photo library

One of the most popular services we offer our clients, is creating photo libraries for them.

In order to stay current and relevant with online marketing, one of the most beneficial things for a company to do is to have a library of images that they can pull from on any given day.

So instead of having a few standard shots that are used throughout different platforms, many of our clients instead are asking us to do a series of images, so that they have more to utilize over a longer period of time. In this way, they have a larger variety of media to choose from, and can therefore react to current events, or simply have better control over what media and images are highlighted over time.

We love this type of assignment as it really relies on our ability to shoot a variety of different scenarios and locations, but still retain a consistent look/feel for the client so their media is diverse but also cohesive all at the same time.  Sounds like a challenge!? We'll take it...

Today we thought we'd share a few examples from a recent photo library we created with the City of Whitehorse. It was so fun over the course of a few months to work with such a large variety of departments, in order to showcase the variety of work the employees do. From winter to summer, office work to heavy machinery, we got to highlight it all.

If this is something you're interested in more of, give us a shout at info@gbpcreative.ca and we can chat about how a photo library might be useful for you!

2018...the year the blog comes back...

Last year we took a little break from blogging. We had a new member join the GBP team (our daughter Mabel) and so paired down a little bit on some things to get her situated in her new job as future assistant for the company.

But  now that we're all back in the full swing, we decided it was time to dust off the old Blog sharing skills and get back into it, so with that, thought we'd jump in by sharing one of our latest projects here in 2018!

We recently did some portraits for our friends who are starting up their new production company, Outpost 31. These guys are pros in the film industry, now combining their talents under one roof and so were looking for some new imagery for their website launch!

Keep your eyes out for projects coming your way from Outpost 31...

Sarah MacDougall is back...

We've been working with a lot of musicians here lately, so thought it would be fitting to end our work week by sharing one of our most recent sessions with the amazingly talented, Sarah MacDougall!

We recently did this studio session with Sarah and wanted to bring in some darker colours, but still keep the mood light. We used movement in a few of the shots and also brought in some of her instruments to help show the diversity of sounds in her latest record.

We've worked with Sarah quite a few times now, and it's always awesome to see how much she's evolved both in her artistic style surrounding the concept of our shoots, as well as musically. If you haven't heard her music yet, stop what you're doing and head to ww.sarahmacdougall.com... she's unreal.

Women of Wisdom

After we finished one of our biggest commercial shoots yet to date last month, we took a full week off, away from the studio, and holed up in a cabin out in Tagish. We felt like we needed some time to relax, to unplug (sometimes it’s so therapeutic to not have the internet), and to reflect on where we’ve gotten to over the past few years.

One of the things we quickly realized, was how awesome it is that so far, this year especially, a lot of the projects we are being asked to work on are really meaningful, not only to our clients but to us personally. I think in any job you can find yourself at times, falling into a daily routine, plugging away, but the projects we’ve done so far this year are anything but routine.

One of those meaningful projects, was working with the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre on a portrait series that was displayed at an event called “Survival Through Our Own Lens” during Victims Week last month.  The goal of the event was to challenge stigmas that society often creates around victims of violence, and along with the portraits, the women of the group created art and music to showcase their stories.

We wanted the portraits to showcase these women’s strength, their beauty and their individuality, and seeing them up on the wall in print was a pretty powerful experience.

So thank you to each and everyone of you for being a part of this project and sharing your stories. It was an honour to work with you!

Portraits of Yukon's Most Awesome...

We were SO stoked when the most recent issue of Yukon North of Ordinary Magazine came out because we've been waiting to share some of our favourite work we've done yet this year which is featured in our photo essay!

Also, we were so pumped how this cover worked out...Raven looks so rad!

So, we often talk about how our favourite part of our job is the people we get to meet along the way, and the stories we hear, so it only  made sense when we thought up the idea to do a specific portrait series which highlights some of the people in our community who we think bring next level awesomeness to what they do...Each person in this series has an incredible story and makes our community such a unique and supportive place to live.  The magazine article has write ups on each person so be sure to check out the full series! (I know they have copies at Mac's Fireweed

In the meantime, we wanted to share some of the images, and send shout outs to everyone who was involved.  You guys are literally why we do what we do, and it was a total honour to have each of you in our studio.

Product Photography, Yukon Styles!

Guys, we've discovered your next pair of boots...

We worked with the fine folks at Wayfare Woollens for both a model shoot, and a product shoot for their line of boots last month, and Brianne may or may not have left with a pair on her feet.

Our models were absolute troopers-willing to stand outside on a very cold day with us, but at least we knew their feet were warm! We did a number of different scenes throughout the day, and then finished off back at our studio to do the product shots.

If you want to check out some of their items (and we highly recommend them), go to: http://www.wayfarewoollens.com
